The Birkenshaw is located in the Connaught-Beltline district, an area
rich in architectural and historical significance in Calgary. Our building
was named in honor of dry-goods merchant Thomas Birkenshaw, who
more than a century ago, built a stately three-story brick and sandstone
mansion which is part of our complex and is situated next door to our
apartment tower. The home's exterior was restored and the building is
consider an architectural gem for its refined elegant design, and it is a
landmark in our City of Calgary historical walking tours. It has been
designated an "Alberta Heritage Home".
Another neighboring grand Heritage Home, just across the street, is
the refurbished Lougheed Manor, with its expansive beautiful Beaulieu
Gardens. Rich in history and a truly magnificent home, it contains a
wonderful restaurant that offers lunch on Wednesdays, Thursdays &
Fridays, and weekend brunches every Saturday & Sunday.
